Sam Judge My name is Samantha Judge and I am twenty years old. I am originally from New York City and am currently attending college at UMASS at Amherst. I am on exchange from New Mexico State University, but plan to transfer to UMASS for next year. The "Body Image in the Media" group appealed to me because I don't like the way women are portrayed in the media and wanted to help spread awareness about the injustice that women are subject to in Society. The imgages that are prevalant in society are extremely damaging to young girls and adult women. I plan to be a journalism major and plan to work in the media when I get out of college. I hope to help spread more positive and enlightened messages about women in order to give young girls more reasons to love themselves and their bodies. Clare McCallum I am a sophomore majoring in Social Thought and Political Economy. I am from Concord, NH. I chose to work on this project because I have always been interested in the way the media, especially certain mainstream magazines, portray women and support unhealthy and unattainable "ideals".
Laura Hern My name is Laura Hearn and I'm a junior at the University of Massachusetts in Amherst,MA. I am currently studying for a Bachelors Degree in Communications with a minor in English. My decision to take Womens Studies 201 was an enlightening experience and has exposed me to the many issues at hand that affect women's lives. The activism aspect of the class was of interest to me because I have always considered myself pro-active in other areas of my life and wanted to extend that to womens studies. This project has been a wonderful experience that has allowed to me to talk with other women about their views and personal thoughts on media and body image. Because I had an interest in this topic before hand, it was interesting for me to hear the views of other women and how the media has affected their own body image and self-esteem. By creating this website and filming this documentary, I hope to share these insights and information with other women.
Laura Perry Major: Psychology Class: 2002 I chose to be in the Body Image/Media group because I think it is important for young women to have positive role models in their lives. They need to see images of women that are strong, confident, and powerful. I am hoping that this website will provide young women with a better perspective on the media and how they portray women. As well as open they eyes to alternative ways of thinking
